Description: Tufted erect perennial to 2 m high; culms wiry, strongly branched. Leaves with sheath smooth or scaberulous; ligule c. 0.3 mm long; blade convolute or conduplicate or sometimes flat, to 1.5 mm wide, long-scabrous on upper surface. Panicle contracted, usually loose, to 15 cm long, branches few, short. Glumes lanceolate, equal or unequal, 6--20 mm long, lower acute to acuminate, upper obtuse. Lemma linear-elliptic, 6--9 mm long, purple or brown with darker margins; awns flattened, divergent, to 30 mm long. Flowering: summer. Distribution and occurrence: Grows on poor or sandy soils.
