Shrub to 3 m high; stems white-woolly usually with prominent scars from leaf bases. Leaves crowded, linear, 1-5 cm long, c. 1 mm wide, apex aculeate, margins revolute, upper surface shiny, lower surface concealed but finely glandular pubescent. Inflorescence a dense or diffuse pyramidal panicle 5-10 cm diam. Heads ovoid to campanulate at maturity, 3-4 mm long, 1-2 mm diam.; involucral bracts in 4 or 5 longitudinally ranked rows (only evident at maturity), ovate with opaque white apex. Florets 2-4, creamy-white. Achenes c. 0.8 mm long, pubescent; pappus c. 2.5 mm long.
