Shrub or small tree without aerial roots to 15m. Found along banks of streams both in rainforest and open Eucalypt forest from Victoria to Mackay, Qld. Flowers are minute - inside fig. Fruit is purple, succulent receptacle, densely hairy, sweet and edible. Ripe mainly Jan - June, but also all year. Useful for a larger garden to attract wildlife. Is edible (remove hairs). Grown from fresh seed or cuttings. Aborigines used the milky latex of young shoots to heal wounds. The fruit is eaten by the Fig bird, Green catbird, grey headed fruit bat.
