Notes
Tree to 20m in regrowth rainforest or on forest margins and sometimes in open forests as well as dry and littoral rainforests from Illawara NSW to Nth Qld, also PNG and Asia. Yellowish/brown flower. Male and female flowers on separate trees. Red capsule-like fruit, mostly 3-lobed containing one black seed in each cell. Generally a small bushy tree when growing in the open. Quite spectacular when in full fruit. From very fresh seed. Seed is remarkably short lived for a pioneer species. Germination can be erratic. The red powder coating the capsules is used as a dye, is used for skin complaints and to rid the body of worms. Known as "Poodgee-poodgera" by local Aborigines.
