Small to medium tree to about 30m high, occurring in a variety of habitats, often in rainforests, but also vine thickets and coastal dune systems; from Jervis Bay, NSW north to Thursday Is, NE Qld. Saplings often unbranched and with an umbrella-like crown of large, compound leaves up to 100cm long, bipinnate with 15-55 or more leaflets; but some leaves on flowering shoots may be 1-pinnate with only 5-9 leaflets; rachises with a swelling, (pulvinule) at each joint. Leaflets ovate to elliptic, hairless, glossy mid-green on both surfaces, 4-13cm long x 3-6.5cm wide, apex acuminate, base +/- rounded, margins entire; aromatic when crushed or bruised. Flowers small, dark purple, arranged in terminal, branched panicles. Flowering April to August. Fruit a globose, compressed 2-seeded berry about 5mm long turning black-purple when ripe. Propagation by seed. Other common names: Black Pencil Cedar.
